More Than a Round of Golf: Investing in the Next Generation

A round of golf lasts a few hours. The opportunity it creates for a young person can last a lifetime.

On September 26, Larry Thomas Youth Development will bring together business leaders, community partners, friends, and supporters for our Sixth Annual Charity Golf Classic at Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix. It will be a morning filled with competition, fellowship, and plenty of fun, but the real purpose of this tournament extends far beyond the golf course.

Every golfer who registers, every company that sponsors, and every person who contributes is investing in young people across Maricopa County who deserve the opportunity to dream bigger and build brighter futures.

That is the heart of Larry Thomas Youth Development.

Our organization was created to continue the legacy of Larry Thomas, a Marine veteran, educator, coach, mentor, and unwavering advocate for young people. He understood something that remains central to our work today: potential is everywhere, but opportunity is not.

For young people, particularly those growing up in underserved communities, having someone believe in you can change the trajectory of your life. Access to a mentor, academic support, career exposure, leadership development, or simply a safe place where someone sees your potential can make the difference between wondering what is possible and believing you can achieve it.

Through educational support, mentorship, scholarships, academic enrichment, career guidance, leadership development, food assistance, and other youth and family programs, Larry Thomas Youth Development works to help young people excel beyond the limitations they may encounter. Our goal is not simply to help students succeed today. We want to help create tomorrow’s leaders.

That is why the Charity Golf Classic matters.

This tournament is one of our most important annual fundraisers, providing critical resources that allow our programs to reach young people and families throughout our community. The dollars raised translate into mentorship. They become educational opportunities. They help provide scholarships, meals, supplies, guidance, and experiences that remind a young person that their circumstances do not have to determine their future.

But this work requires a community.

No nonprofit can create lasting change alone. It takes businesses willing to invest, volunteers willing to serve, mentors willing to show up, and people who understand that strengthening our young people ultimately strengthens Arizona.

So when we tee off on September 26, we will be playing for something much bigger than a scorecard.

We will be playing for possibility.
We will be investing in potential.

And together, we will continue a legacy built on the belief that when young people are given the support, resources, and opportunity to succeed, there is no limit to how far they can go.
